NABC On the Court Open Practice with Scott Nagy: Offensive Sets, Defensive Breakdown Drills & 5-on-5 Scott Nagy has guided Wright State to the past two Horizon League regular season titles. He has also won three straight Horizon League Coach of the Year awards. In this unique video, you will see what Nagy does in practice that has helped him lead his team to three straight titles. Offensive Sets & Breakdown Drills In the first part of the practice, you will see 10 different sets you can add to your playbook. Each involves a lot of player movement and screening actions that are designed to break down the defense early in the shot clock. Coach Nagy works on these plays while simultaneously warming up his team. You will then see how Coach Nagy maximizes efficiency with a series of rapid quick-hitting drills that work on skill development. Players roll through 10 offensive and defensive breakdown drills working on everything from perimeter cuts on ball screens to movement on a post feed. The “4-Minute Shooting Drill” is a great addition to any program. It works on that extra pass to get players great shots and plenty of reps in a limited amount of time. There are also seven defensive breakdowns you’ll see to improve closeout technique, on-ball defense, help rotations, and rebounding. The 2-on-2 Interchange and 3-on-3 Action Drills can be used to improve any defense. 5-on-5 Nothing beats quality game-like scrimmaging in practice. Coach Nagy will show you three different formats he uses to build a true game-like environment. “5-on-5 Full to Full” restricts players to limited trips so they can focus on elements of the transition game. “10 Possessions” gets players to value every possession and “10 Trips” simulates game-like action while allowing coaches the opportunity to teach.
